Here is what our Solar System would like as viewed by NGST without the aid of BOSS. In this image we have moved our Solar System 10 parsecs away from us (but this doesn't matter, at all distances we consider the images look identical). In the image no planets can be seen. Instead we just see the left over glow of the star.
This images shows a 2 arcsecond by 2 arcsecond region around the star. The central portion of the image (roughly where boss would be) has been cut out by hand to avoid saturating pixels in the middle of image. This image assumes a 3000 second exposure. In the image we have subtracted off what the occulted star is expected to look like. The left over light from the star is due to counting noise and our uncertainty in the point spread function of the telescope.
